In this paper, a charge control applied to parallel-connected DC-DC converters is proposed. Charge control is a kind of current-mode control, in which the integral of the inductor current in the on state of each switching cycle reaches a reference value. This value is the feedback output signal of a pole placement block, which fixes the poles of the output-voltage.

This paper presents a discrete nonlinear control scheme for PWM inverters. Based on the dynamic model of the PWM inverter a control algorithm is deduced by imposing a desired linear dynamics in the output voltage. The proposed scheme has shown its robustness on low voltage distortion, excellent voltage regulation and it is insensitive to load and input voltage variations. A simple and fast digital algorithm, that could be implemented on a low-cost DSP, carries out the discrete control.

ABSTRACT Unbalanced voltages in three-phase power systems is a common perturbation propagated along the grid. Distributed Generation plants have gained widespread attention due to their capability to improve power quality in a distributed manner, including voltage unbalance mitigation. A conventional control strategy to command power plants during balanced grid voltages, is the use of power factor to inject/absorb reactive power depending on grid conditions. Advanced control strategies during unbalanced grid voltages can be selected prioritizing positive or negative sequence active and reactive power. This selection determines the voltage support service and therefore can improve the voltage profile, i.e. phase-voltages can be properly supported and voltage imbalance simultaneously corrected. Based on the definition of effective power factor in IEEE 1459 Standard, the reactive power needed for any control strategy is obtained and the resulting effects are described.

ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new active damping method based on virtual resistors for three-phase grid connected voltage source inverters (VSI) with LCL filter. The use of this filters is a standard solution to provide the proper attenuation to the sideband voltage harmonics of the modulation signal. However these grid filters can introduce an unstable dynamics if a passive or active damping is not properly introduced. The passive damping solution causes a decrease of the overall efficiency due to the associated losses and reduces the filter effectiveness but in contrast no more extra sensors are needed. Active damping methods are more efficient because they don't introduce losses but suffers from control and system complexity because in some cases a high number of sensors are needed. The proposed strategy employs a nonlinear sliding mode control (SMC) scheme in natural frame in combination with a Kalman filter to emulate a resistor in the LCL filter which damps the system actively without the use of extra sensors. Two current controllers are designed in order to control the active and reactive power independently and a voltage controller is designed to control the neutral point which is fixed with a third harmonic voltage in order to increase the control dynamic range.

ABSTRACT Voltage sags are one of the main problems in transmission and distribution grids with high penetration of distributed generation. This paper proposes a voltage support control scheme for grid-connected power sources under voltage sags. The control is based on the injection of reactive current with a variable ratio between positive and negative sequences. The controller determines, also, the amount of reactive power needed to restore the dropped voltage magnitudes to new reference values confined within the continuous operation limits required in grid codes. These reference values are chosen in order to guarantee low current injection when fulfilling the voltage support objective. Selected experimental results are reported in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

ABSTRACT Nowadays, the majority of the photovoltaic (PV) power sources are connected to the public grid. One of the main connection problems occurs when voltage sags appear in the grid due to short circuits, lightning, etc. International standards regulate the grid connection of PV systems, forcing the source to remain connected during short-time grid-voltage faults. As a consequence, during the voltage sag, the source should operate with increasing converter currents to maintain the injection of the generated power. This abnormal operation may result in nondesired system disconnections due to overcurrents. This paper proposes a controller for a PV three-phase inverter that ensures minimum peak values in the grid-injected currents, as compared with conventional controllers. From the system analysis, a design method is presented in order to set the parameters of the control scheme. Selected experimental results are reported in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control.

ABSTRACT This paper describes a control design methodology based on output impedance analysis for multiphase synchronous buck converters. This design leads to an optimal output voltage transient response. Two design alternatives are proposed. The first alternative uses an equivalent single-phase converter to design the control parameters. This approximation is valid as long as the deviations between the phases of the converter are within the usual tolerance limits. The second one achieves exact constant resistive output impedance regardless of the differences that exist between the phases. Simulation and experimental results are reported in order to validate the two design approaches.

ABSTRACT Static synchronous compensators have been broadly employed for the provision of electrical ac network services, which include voltage regulation, network balance, and stability improvement. Several studies of such compensators have also been conducted to improve the ac network operation during unbalanced voltage sags. This paper presents a complete control scheme intended for synchronous compensators operating under these abnormal network conditions. In particular, this control scheme introduces two contributions: a novel reactive current reference generator and a new voltage support control loop. The current reference generator has as a main feature the capacity to supply the required reactive current even when the voltage drops in amplitude during the voltage sag. Thus, a safe system operation is easily guaranteed by fixing the limit required current to the maximum rated current. The voltage control loop is able to implement several control strategies by setting two voltage set points. In this paper, three voltage support control strategies are proposed, and their advantages and limitations are discussed in detail. The two theoretical contributions of this paper have been validated by experimental results. Certainly, the topic of voltage support is open for further research, and the control scheme proposed in this paper can be viewed as an interesting configuration to devise other control strategies in future works.

ABSTRACT The growth of the Spanish photovoltaic (PV) sector in the period 2004–2008 rendered Spain a prominent place among top worldwide countries. Yet, this growth was rather uneven across the different Spanish regions which raised the interest on the drivers ultimately effecting these disparities. Especially controversial were the arguments about the influence of the administrative procedure and the landscape policy on the development of GCPVS on-floor. This study therefore discloses both two elements and evaluates their impact in a group of PV prominent Spanish regions and Catalonia, the latter used as a benchmark because of its comprehensive and stringent regulation on landscape protection, which was accused by the PV industry of thwarting the development of the GCPVS on-floor. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were carried out. In particular two indexes were elaborated to determine the consistency of the arguments pointing to the landscape protection policy as a decisive barrier to GCPVS growth. First, when the analysis is made in relative terms, the ranking of PV prominent regions changes and many of the differences vanish. Second, rather than the preeminence of a landscape protection policy what really matters for GCPVS on-floor growth is the administrative procedure and the processing enabling its implementation.

ABSTRACT In Energy Policy, 38 (7) 3297–3308, Dusonchet and Telaretti contribute a significant deal to the field of PV comparative policy analysis in the EU by addressing the impact of the PV regulatory framework on the investment decisions of the sector—as determined by net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) indices—in seventeen Western EU countries. As a necessary first step, the authors bring off a concise and straightforward analysis of the different legal frameworks ruling solar PVS implementation in those countries. In the specific case of Spain we have identified some imprecision that could lead to misunderstandings about the role and impact of the PV legal framework on the massive expansion of the sector, especially during the so-called “Spanish PV Boom”.This note is intended to add on the authors' primary and challenging effort to provide a systematic analysis of the Spanish PV sector by contextualizing this period of hype and, on the basis of this analysis, contribute our own understanding about how the complexity and uncertainties generated by the successive frameworks might have triggered such a frenzied response by the market.
